NJ-ING speakers presented “Getting to know American Muslims and their Faith” at Cliffside Park Middle School on March 21st., 2024. Close to 40 students elected to attend the presentation, a handful of them were Muslims! The session was truly interactive. The students asked a lot of good questions, and it was more like a discussion. NJ-ING speaker asked the Muslim students if they were fasting, and where their families are from. They were from Russia, Palestine, and Egypt. They all had their predawn meals before 5:30 am. The Principal of the Middle School who invited us was grateful for the informative presentation and discussion.

Two NJ-ING speakers participated in a panel discussion about “Equity and Diversity” at Watchung Regional HS on October 11th., 2023. The panel included six representatives from the “Hispanic community, Muslim Community, African American community, and Asian community”. The panel members were able to illustrate to the 9th graders that diversity is powerful and multifaceted, and that every student is valued, and can make a difference in someone’s life with a kind word, appropriate outreach, a sympathetic ear, and/or a thoughtful question. Working together, we can build a community that celebrates our “shared humanity.” A week after the event, we received wonderful feedback from the organizer saying: “Thanks so much for the intentionality and professionalism that you were able to approach this task with; the students benefited immensely. I continue to have conversations with the 9th graders and visit health classes to hear additional feedback, and to see how students are interacting now that they have had time to reflect on your messages of empathy and kindness, commitment, and collaboration in the context of unspeakable violence, and intense geopolitical turmoil over the past three weeks.”
